What is subacromial impingement syndrome?

Have you ever had pain in your shoulder when you raised your arm above your head? 74% of all people experience severe shoulder pain at least once at least occasionally when raising their arm.

So the syndrome seems to be quite common. But can you explain it in a way that others can understand straight away?

The subacromial impingement syndrome is a compression syndrome in which the rotator cuff tendons and the subacromial bursa under the shoulder roof become trapped, causing severe pain when abducting the arm between 60° and 120°.

Anatomy can be intimidating. As a medical student, I often found it dry and overwhelming. But over time, I have come to appreciate its beauty and importance.

Even as a child, I often went to the doctor or to physiotherapy, where they tried to explain to me how the human body works using standard anatomical pictures.

But the spark didn't fly: I could see and understand the pictures, but they were just ugly. With this basic idea in mind, I founded Animus Medicus and since then I've been happy every day about how many people are also enthusiastic about anatomy.
